Datico Integration: h-p-cosmos - treadmill ergometer & performance diagnostics

Connection to Datico® Live Control

h/p/cosmos

Conveyor belt control in the overall digital system

The integration of treadmill systems and ergometers from h/p/cosmos sports & medical GmbH in Datico® Live Control enables via the coscom protocol direct control and real-time data transmission of treadmill systems. Training parameters, vital data and environmental information are recorded synchronously and brought together in a consistent overall context – as the basis for precise, data-based analyses.

Direct control and real-time integration in Datico® Live Control

The treadmill systems from h/p/cosmos are not only used as a data source in this setup, but are also actively integrated into the training and measurement process. Bidirectional communication based on the coscom protocol takes place via integration in Datico® Live Control.

In concrete terms, this means

  • Real-time control of speed and incline
  • Synchronized data acquisition of all training parameters
  • Consistent linking with other data sources

The technical connection is currently made via RS232 or RJ45 and will be expanded in the future to include wireless technologies such as Bluetooth.

Supplement to the zebris integration

The connection to the biomechanical measurement systems of zebris Medical GmbH treadmill data from h/p/cosmos is already being recorded – albeit downstream as part of a completed measurement and analysis report.

The integration described here goes a decisive step further:
Via the direct connection to Datico® Live Control , the treadmill data is integrated live, controllable and fully synchronized into the overall process.

Result:
Not just analysis afterwards, but active control and real-time synchronization of complex training and study scenarios.

Cross-system data synchronization in the application context

As part of a research project at the Max Planck Institute this integration was implemented in a complex study scenario.

The following data sources were merged synchronously:

  • Treadmill data (speed, incline, status parameters)
  • Ambient data from the altitude or hypoxia chamber
  • Heart rate via the Polar H10
  • SpO₂ data via corresponding sensor systems

The merging takes place in Datico® Live Control and is then transferred to the Datico® LIFE HUB in a structured manner.

From live training to holistic data analysis

The decisive added value comes from the combination of live control and a central data platform:

  • Training is controlled and documented in real time in Datico® Live Control
  • In the Datico® LIFE HUB, this data is merged with existing patient, test subject or athlete data

This creates:

  • a complete temporal and content-related context of all training and measurement data
  • A consistent data history across different applications
  • a reliable basis for in-depth analyses, evaluations and decision-making processes

New integration and documentation options for manufacturers

For h/p/cosmos this connection opens up a new dimension of system integration:

The treadmill data recorded via Datico® Live Control can be processed in a standardized way and passed on via established interfaces, for example via:

  • HL7
  • FHIR
  • DICOM

This allows training and performance data to be recorded:

  • Seamlessly integrate into clinical information systems
  • Integrate into existing documentation processes
  • for research, therapy and performance analysis in a structured way

Result:
A significant expansion of connectivity to existing IT ecosystems.

FAQ | Frequently asked questions

Integration of h/p/cosmos in the Datico® LIFE HUB

How are the h/p/cosmos treadmills technically integrated?

Integration takes place via the coscom protocol and is implemented in Datico® Live Control. This enables bidirectional communication, which includes both the recording of all relevant training parameters and the active control of the treadmill in real time.

In addition, integration into Datico® Live Control enables the treadmill data to be combined directly with other physiological measurement data and environmental parameters. These include in particular

  • Wearables and sensor systems (e.g. heart rate, SpO₂) via Bluetooth
  • Data from climatic, altitude or hypoxia chambers
  • Other connected measuring and training systems

This data is synchronized in real time and recorded in a common context, which opens up completely new possibilities in live analysis, training control and study implementation.

In the next step, all data is automatically transferred to the Datico® LIFE HUB. There it is merged with existing patient, test subject or athlete data as well as other measurement, analysis and feedback information.

This creates a holistic database that:

  • provides a complete overview of the respective user.
  • allows the combination with historical and supplementary data.
  • and supports a comprehensive evaluation and interpretation in the overall context.

In the case of integration via zebris Medical GmbH the integration of the treadmill data from h/p/cosmos in a classic measurement system context. Technically, this corresponds to the connection of a treadmill to an ECG or spiroergometry system:

The treadmill is integrated into the measuring system via the respective manufacturer’s software, a defined measurement is carried out and the evaluated results are then transferred to the Datico® LIFE HUB as a structured report.

This approach is therefore characterized by a downstream data transfer in which the analysis takes place in the primary system.

The integration via Datico® Live Control described here, on the other hand, takes a fundamentally different approach:
The treadmill is directly and fully integrated into the running process so that all training and measurement data is recorded, controlled and synchronized in real time.

The treadmill functions via the coscom protocol as an active component of the system architecture. Other systems and sensors that supply data via the protocol or connected interfaces can also be directly integrated into the data flow.

A key advantage of this architecture is the extended data availability and further processing:
The data recorded in Datico® Live Control is transferred to the Datico® LIFE HUB and can be flexibly processed from there, for example:

  • Integration into clinical systems via HL7, FHIR or DICOM
  • Transfer to scientific evaluation tools (e.g. MATLAB, SPSS)
  • Connection to BI and reporting systems such as Power BI
  • Use via APIs for individual analysis and research environments

Result:
While the integration via Zebris primarily represents a structured transfer of results after a measurement has been completed, the direct connection via Datico Live Control enables continuous, real-time data acquisition and flexible, cross-system processing.

In live operation, all of the functions performed by the treadmill system from h/p/cosmos sports & medical GmbH training and measurement data provided by the coscom protocol to Datico® Live Control and processed there in real time.

These include in particular

  • Speed and gradient parameters
  • Heart rate (if recorded by the system)
  • Stride frequency and stride length
  • Further device-specific performance and status data

A key advantage of this architecture lies in the system role of the treadmill:
The treadmill acts as a central data node (master) within the measurement environment. This means that not only the original treadmill data can be recorded, but also data from third-party systems that are connected directly to the treadmill via additional coscom interfaces.

This enables:

  • the integration of further measuring systems via the treadmill as a central interface
  • a consolidated collection of heterogeneous data sources
  • a simplified system architecture with a high level of data integration at the same time

All recorded data is synchronized in Datico® Live Control and then transferred to the Datico® LIFE HUB in a structured manner.

There they are available in the overall context of other physiological, diagnostic and training-related data and form the basis for comprehensive analyses, evaluations and scientific assessments.

The data recorded in live operation of the treadmill systems from h/p/cosmos sports & medical GmbH are first processed in Datico® Live Control in real time and synchronized with other data sources. These include in particular

  • Wearables and sensor systems (e.g. heart rate, SpO₂)
  • Other medical and sports science measuring devices
  • Environmental data from climate, altitude or hypoxia chambers

Even at this level, a consistent live data stream is created that enables training and stress situations to be evaluated immediately.

In the next step, all data is transferred to the Datico® LIFE HUB in a structured manner. There it is merged with all other available information on the respective patient, test subject or athlete – regardless of the source, time or measurement system.

The result is a consistent, cross-system overall view that combines different measurement worlds and makes them comparable.

The Datico® LIFE HUB naturally offers extensive options for analyzing the data directly, including

  • Datico® Index
Creation of aggregated key figures from several key performance indicators (e.g. endurance index from ergospirometry or lactate data) for simplified, target group-oriented interpretation of complex measured values

  • Datico® Reference Sets
Contextualization of individual measurement parameters through defined comparison values (e.g. traffic light logic red-yellow-green) for quick evaluation and classification

  • Datico® IDOL (reference profiles)
Comparison of individual measurement results with freely definable ideal or target profiles for the holistic evaluation of test batteries and performance states

  • Longitudinal progression analyses
Presentation and analysis of the development of performance and health parameters over time across several measurement points

  • Benchmarking & group comparisons
Comparison of patients, test subjects or athletes with reference groups or peer groups to identify strengths, weaknesses and development potential

  • Integration in scientific analysis environments
Further processing of the data in tools such as IBM SPSS Statistics, MATLAB or R (programming language) for carrying out in-depth statistical and model-based analyses

  • Connection to BI and reporting systems
Integration in platforms such as Microsoft Power BI or Qlik Sense for visualization, aggregation and company-wide provision of key figures

  • Integration into clinical and administrative systems
Transfer of data to hospital information systems (HIS) and electronic patient files (ePA) to support end-to-end documentation and care processes

This means that the data obtained during training is not viewed in isolation, but is transferred into a comprehensive analytical context – as a basis for well-founded decisions in clinical practice, research and performance optimization.

The integration of the treadmill systems from h/p/cosmos sports & medical GmbH into Datico® Live Control and the Datico® LIFE HUB creates a consistent, valid and highly efficient database for clinical and scientific applications.

A key advantage lies in the real-time monitoring and control of complex measurement scenarios:
Without a central platform, data from different, isolated systems would have to be merged manually. Datico® Live Control, on the other hand, enables live display and control of all relevant parameters – for example in climate chambers, altitude or hypoxia chambers – with the integration of:

  • Wearables and Bluetooth-based sensor systems
  • Ambient data (e.g. air composition, pressure conditions)
  • Exercise equipment such as treadmills or ergometers

Another key advantage is the automated, time-synchronized data acquisition:
All parameters are recorded synchronously across all systems in real time. Time-consuming manual merging and time-based reconciliation – using Excel-based processes, for example – are completely eliminated. This leads to:

  • a considerable time saving
  • a significant reduction in sources of error
  • significantly higher data quality and reproducibility

In addition, integration into the Datico® LIFE HUB creates comprehensive analytical added value:

In addition, the platform opens up extensive possibilities for further processing and integration into third-party systems:

  • Integration into scientific analysis environments
Further processing of the data in tools such as IBM SPSS Statistics, MATLAB or R (programming language) for carrying out in-depth statistical and model-based analyses

  • Connection to BI and reporting systems
Integration in platforms such as Microsoft Power BI or Qlik Sense for visualization, aggregation and company-wide provision of key figures

  • Integration into clinical and administrative systems
Transfer of data to hospital information systems (HIS) and electronic patient files (ePA) to support end-to-end documentation and care processes

Result:
A consistent, scalable and scientifically robust data infrastructure that significantly improves both the implementation of complex studies and the data-based optimization of therapy and training processes.
